New course for Autumn 2024.

Learn to paint a still life using acrylic paints. This course will take you through the basics of still life painting to produce one or two realistic paintings using traditional techniques, adapted to acrylic media.

One afternoon a week for six weeks.

About the course

The course is friendly, informal and, I hope, fun.

We will aim to produce a realistic still life painting. By studying a still life in detail, this course focusses on a particular subject and painting style.

Student work in progress:

Acrylic paints are very versatile, but I’ll be using them in a traditional style, not unlike oil paints.

Having much more time to developing a painting will give a more in-depth experience.

As always, I assume no previous experience, making the course suitable for beginners, although I hope it will also appeal to those with a little painting experience wishing to gain a more in-depth understanding or wishing to focus on one particular subject.

You'll learn:

  • Composition
  • Using an under-painting
  • Colour mixing
  • Contrast
  • Glazing using acrylic mediums

Using acrylic paint can achieve results very similar to oil paint, but with easier handling, cleaning of brushes, quicker drying times and no unpleasant odours.

I hope everyone will take away paintings they can be proud of.

We'll work on one or two paintings together so you will have plenty of time to practice but also have the chance to 'paint along' with a live demonstration, with as much help and guidance as you would like.

The main language is English, but if they can forgive my French, I welcome any French speakers.
