Galerie JS is closed for holidays from Saturday 14th September to Wednesday 18th September. Re-opens 10:00 on 19th September.

One morning a week for eight weeks.

  • Always wanted to try drawing, but don’t know where to start or thought you can’t draw?
  • Bought some materials, but lack the confidence to get them out of the wrapper?
  • Keep telling yourself you’ll ‘get back to art’, but never seem to find the time?

UPDATE: The Tuesday afternoon course is now full, but if you would still like to participate there is the possibility I could run the course on Tuesday mornings as well. If you are interested, please complete the form below or send me an email and I'll let you know if I have sufficient numbers.

Drawing is a skill that can be learnt by anyone with a little practice, encouragement and determination.

If you’re a complete beginner, a previous course member, or you feel you’d like to get back into drawing I am sure this course will help you learn or improve your skills.

The course is run by me, Jon, a working designer, illustrator and artist with over 30 years experience. I am also a (UK) qualified teacher.

Some examples from previous drawing classes (click image to enlarge):

Organisation

The course is friendly, informal and, I hope, fun. There is usually a short presentation or practical demonstration, followed by plenty of time to work at your own pace. There is a progressive structure, so each week aims to introduce different media, subjects and skills to try.

We’ll be working in pencil, graphite, ink and charcoal to give plenty of time to grasp the basics of drawing and try out new materials and techniques.

The main language is English, but if they can forgive my French, I would welcome any French speakers.

Dates & Venue

The course will run for 8 weeks on a Tuesday afternoon from 13:30 to 16:30 with a short break for tea/coffee around 15:00. The course will start on 24/9/2019 and finish on 19/11/2019 (missing a week on the 15/10/19).

The venue will be 29 rue Sainte-Marie, Monflanquin. Tea and coffee will be provided, but if you prefer fruit/herbal teas etc, please bring whatever you prefer.

Materials

A basic range of paper and drawing materials will be provided, although many people prefer to bring their own.

Pencils in HB, 3B and 6B, an eraser and A3 size (or larger) drawing paper (not watercolour paper) are the minimum you will need..

Cost

To provide a high level of personal attention and to avoid overcrowding, the number of places is limited to 8 people. The cost of the eight week course will be 100€ per person, payable in advance and includes tuition, basic materials, tea/coffee and room hire.

Places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis..

New Course for Winter 2019

Painting with Acrylics

One afternoon a week for ten weeks

A new 10 week course aimed at beginners to acrylic paints.

Through two or three set piece paintings (as time allows) you’ll discover how to paint in a semi-realistic/impressionist style with me, professional artist Jon Sephton.

You’ll learn to paint a still life and one or two landscapes, learning skills and techniques along the way. Acrylic paints are very versatile, but I’ll focus on using them in a traditional oil-painting style.

I hope everyone will take away paintings they can be proud of.

All paints, brushes and materials are provided so there’s no need to worry about having the ‘right’ equipment.

Dates & Venue

The course will run for 10 weeks on Tuesday afternoons from 13:30 to 16:30, starting 5th February 2019 and finishing on the 9th of April 2019.

The venue will be 29 rue Sainte-Marie, Monflanquin. Tea and coffee will be provided, but if you prefer fruit/herbal teas etc, please bring whatever you prefer.

Organisation

The course is friendly, informal and, I hope, fun. We will work on one subject together, working from a photograph. It is anticipated that a painting may take two or three sessions so there will be plenty of time to work at your own pace with as much help and guidance as you would like.

The main language is English, but if they can forgive my French, I would welcome any French speakers.

Materials

All materials and equipment is included in the cost of the course. Included in the price of the course is:

  • Studio quality acrylic paint. For economy, larger tubes are used from which you can take fresh paint each week.
  • Canvas boards, smaller intially but with a larger final piece at 50cm x 60cm.
  • Acrylic medium for adjusting the paint
  • Set of six brushes for each person (to keep)

Cost

To provide a high level of personal attention and to avoid overcrowding, the number of places is limited to

8 people. The cost of the ten week course will be 160€ per person, payable at the first session and includes tuition, all materials, tea/coffee and room hire.

A great way to practice and improve your drawing skills. Inktober challenges you produce drawings (primarily in ink) throughout October and post the result onto social media (Facebook, Instagram etc) with the hashtag #inktober or #inktober2108.

You can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

Post it on any social media account you want or just post it on your refrigerator. The point is to share your art with someone. :)

It's purely for fun and for people of all abilities, there's no judging or prizes although people can comment on your work. Positivity and encouragement are the usual responses.

For  more information, there's a website: https://inktober.com/ and Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/208139582937200/

As their website says, "ANYONE CAN DO INKTOBER, JUST PICK UP A PEN AND START DRAWING."

Update 3/10/2018 - only 1  place remaining.

Drawing for Beginners and Improvers runs for eight Tuesday mornings, starting on 9th October 2018. For more information click here >

Never seems to be much time for sketching, but here are a couple from our recent (far too short) break in Biscarosse, on the Atlantic coast.
