art painting holiday france

Sketch, draw and paint in one of France's 'most beautiful villages' with local artist Jon Sephton as your guide

Sketching the Maison du Prince Noir, MonflanquinIn response to requests I've planned three sketching holidays based in and around Monflanquin.

A few people asked at the gallery last year if I did any short courses or tuition that could form part of their holiday.

I therefore spent some time over the winter looking at the current range of painting holidays on offer and I've seen that the 'luxury' end of the market is certainly well provided for. Fully catered, exotic chateaux with gourmet food and limitless wine are easy to find, but for many people less easy to afford.

A new approach

Sketching in the village square, MonflanquinHere's an art activity that you can integrate into your holiday, or make it the focus of your holiday. All the enjoyment of learning to draw and paint with like-minded people with the flexibility of accommodation to suit your needs and budget.

I provide the agenda and art tuition, you choose your own accommodation and meals. If you're planning a family holiday, one or two family members could attend the course whilst the others do their own thing, then meet up in the evening for meals or a trip out together. You can meet up with fellow course members socially or not, it's up to you. If you already live in the area and fancy a short art course, it's easy to come along as you already have your accommodation.

'Urban' sketching

A sketch of the east side of Monflanquin centre
There has been a surge of interest in so-called 'urban sketching' in recent years. It's really what many artists have been doing for years, sketching their surroundings from life. It doesn't have to to be urban, but it does involve getting out and sketching in the environment. There's even a worldwide movement dedicated to sharing this great pastime:

There's so much of interest hidden round every corner of the ancient streets of Monflanquin, it makes an ideal focus to get to grips with sketching. Keeping a sketchbook is a great way of looking back on events and memories - if you've never tried this before, you'll find yourself seeing things in new ways and remembering them in ways you wouldn't have believed possible.

Old doorway in MonflanquinAs a dedicated sketcher, professional artist and qualified teacher I'll help you get to grips with drawing what you can see and then developing your drawings further using light, shade and colour. We'll be based around my art gallery in the central square of the village, but I plan to spend as much time outside as possible.

I'm proposing four days of activity on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30am to 6pm with a break for lunch. This can then be easily incorporated into a 'normal' holiday, or made into a week's art holiday should you wish. This leaves Wednesday as a 'spare' day when you can have a change of pace and do something else or continue painting as you wish.

We'll sketch both in the village and a few great locations nearby to get a real flavour of the area.

We'll look at ways to produce quick observational drawings of building, landscape and people and develop those skills using pencil, markers and watercolour. You'll soon find yourself looking at things in a new way and starting to develop a style of your own.

I'll also introduce you to shading, perspective and adding effective colour to you artwork.

To ensure a high level of personal attention, numbers will be limited to a maximum of 8 people per course.

Basic sketching kit

You'll need a sketchbook, pencil, a couple of fineliner pens, a small watercolour set and a couple of brushes. I'll send a suggested equipment list nearer the time, so if you're a complete beginner don't worry.

Monflanquin has plenty of accommodation to offer at many different price points. If you fancy the fully-catered option, choose an hotel or 'chambre d'hote' with meals provided. There's no shortage of restaurants in the village though - you could eat in a different place every night if you wished and that's without even leaving the village.

There are also several houses for rent in Monflanquin and many within a few minute's drive, so if you fancy staying in a 14th century house in the village centre or a quieter location, perhaps with a pool, I can suggest some options to you or you're welcome find your own.

Getting here

If you're not travelling by car, the options are:

  • Bergerac Airport: about 40 minutes away. Major car hire firms have desks here, making hiring a car easy. Taxis can be arranged although they are expensive (around 80€ each way), meaning in most cases car hire will be a cheaper option.
  • Bordeaux Airport: about 2 hours away.
  • Toulouse Airport: about 2 hours away.
  • Rodez Airport: about 2 and a half hours away.
  • Limoges Airport: about 3 hours away.

Agen and Bergerac have mainline stations.

200€ per person incuding all tuition for four days. Excludes materials, transport, meals, refreshments and accommodation although I can provide assistance with finding accommodation.
